RS-1 (Rapid Setting grade 1) is an anionic bitumen emulsion designed for applications requiring quick breaking and rapid bond development. It consists of bitumen droplets dispersed in water with a negative electrical charge. RS-1 breaks rapidly upon contact with mineral aggregates, releasing bitumen for immediate adhesion. It's primarily used for tack coats between asphalt layers, surface dressing, and cold mix asphalt production.

RS-1 is primarily used for: (1) Tack coats between asphalt layers to ensure strong bonding and prevent delamination; (2) Surface dressing with aggregate chippings; (3) Cold mix asphalt production; (4) Road repair and pothole patching; (5) Chip seal applications on low-traffic roads; (6) Industrial flooring and waterproofing. The rapid setting characteristic makes it ideal for projects requiring quick reopening to traffic.

Rapid setting refers to the speed at which the emulsion breaks — the process where bitumen droplets coalesce and separate from water. RS-1 breaks within seconds of application, particularly when in contact with siliceous (acidic) aggregates. This rapid breaking provides immediate bonding strength, allowing quick trafficking of treated surfaces. This contrasts with medium setting (MS) or slow setting (SS) emulsions which break more gradually.

RS-1 and RS-2 are both rapid setting anionic emulsions, but differ primarily in viscosity: RS-1 has lower viscosity (thin consistency) while RS-2 has higher viscosity (medium consistency). RS-1 is typically used for penetration/spray applications, while RS-2 is preferred for heavier applications requiring more material per unit area. Both are covered under ASTM D977 and EN 13808 standards.

RS-1 bitumen emulsion is considered more environmentally friendly than hot bitumen for several reasons: (1) Cold application eliminates high-temperature energy consumption; (2) Water-based formulation reduces VOC emissions; (3) Non-flammable during transport (unlike hot bitumen); (4) Can be stored and transported at ambient temperatures. The water phase evaporates during breaking, leaving only the bitumen residue.
